Cameron, Evelyn J. (1868-1928)
Waiting to be Shorn, Montana.

Terry, Montana, early 20th century.

Black-and-white image printed from glass negative depicting a group of grazing sheep in a field with a sheep wagon drawn by two horses, with two mounted riders and mountains in the distance; presented on a charcoal gray period mount titled in ink on verso, likely in Cameron's hand; with Cameron's rubber stamp in purple ink, "Photo by E.J. Cameron, Terry, Mont."; Cameron's initials in the negative; later title and owner's name in ink on verso; 6½ x 4¾ in. image on a 9 x 7 in. mount.

Cameron came from England all the way to Montana before the railroads. Her fabulous images of the American West often feature the animals and people inhabiting the region she loved. She and her husband practiced falconry, raised wolves as pets, and thoroughly enjoyed the rugged homesteading lifestyle on the range. The fact that she was also a proficient and productive photographer under these conditions we are grateful for, as it has provided so many vivid images of everyday pioneer life from the period.
