Cantieni, Margaret Balzer (1914-2002)
Untitled.

1946.

Tempera on gessoed panel, signed and dated at lower right and verso; 277 x 355 mm; 11 x 14 in.

Cantieni sought the essence of physical subjects by merging colors and composition with sound and spirit through her abstract works. She was born in Kansas and spent most of her childhood in the Midwest. Her long career began at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, supplemented by László Moholy-Nagy's summer session at Mills College, Oakland, and Josef Alber's classes at Black Mountain College. After she married artist Joseph Cantieni in 1947, she moved to New York, where she met Stanley Hayter and was deeply influenced by Atelier 17. She and her husband moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania a year later, where he taught at Muhlenberg College. She continued to create art and teach for the rest of her life.
