Additional Details

While on a boat trip with her master to Philadelphia, Jane Johnson let it be known that she wished to escape. Williamson, the secretary of the Pennsylvania Anti-slavery Society, heard this information and led a group of free Blacks onto the boat to liberate her. In the confusion, Johnson and her children escaped on their own. Williamson argued in his defense at the trial that at no time was Johnson in his custody, and he was eventually freed from jail on those grounds. See Finkelman, Slavery in the Courtroom, pages 39-43.<
