Cassini, Giovanni Domenico (1625-1712)
Ephemerides Bononienses Mediceorum Syderum ex Hypothesis, et Tabulis.

Bologna: Emilio Maria and Fratelli Manolessi, 1668.

First edition, small folio, the Haskell Norman copy; the text consisting mainly of tables, with prefatory material; bound in full contemporary limp parchment ruled in gilt and nicely preserved (some spotting to contents); with the bookseller's ticket of Garisenda Antiquariato in Bologna inside front board, along with that of Haskell Norman; three inked initials on front fly leaf etched through the leaf; 11 x 7 3/4 in.

Norman 411.

Galileo first observed Jupiter's moons, but was not in possession of a telescope powerful enough to use their positions to establish longitude. Cassini, working with Campani & Divini, was able to come up with a more powerful instrument, armed with which he produced these tables.

Ex libris Professor, Astronomer, Historian & Bibliophile Owen Gingerich.
