Catlett continued her exploration of printmaking after accepting a Rosenwald Fund Fellowship to study in Mexico in 1946. Her interest in social themes and representational work seemed more appropriate in the context of the work of Mexican artists in the period, in contrast to the American trend toward Abstract Expressionism. She lived in Mexico for decades, only returning to the States in 1983.
