First edition of these illustrations, quarto, accompanied by an anonymously written abridged anthology of thirty-one adventures pulled from the original story; the plates in an early state, unnumbered; title printed in red and black, engraved vignette, and without a border of type ornaments; illustrated with thirty-one full page plates after Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), Boucher, Cochin, Lebas and Trémolières, engraved by Bernard Picart, Folke, Schley, and Tanjé; two vignettes by Jacobus van der Schley grace the title and dedication leaves; bound in full contemporary red morocco, boards ruled in gilt, inner gilt dentelles, gilt-tooled spine with original label, all edges gilt; attractive blue paste-paper endleaves, slightly rubbed, unsophisticated and very nicely preserved, 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 in.
