Second English language edition, folio, translated by Thomas Shelton; text in two parts with separate title page for the second; each title with two small woodcut ornaments above imprint; lacking final blank Aaaa4; bound in full 18th century speckled English calfskin, with blind-tooled compartments on boards; spine decorated with Sir Andrew Fountaine's (1676-1753) gilt elephant tools and a handsome period lettering piece, joints slightly cracked, some wear to head, tail and corners, generally very nicely preserved; extensive 18th century notes in ink neatly written inside front board, mostly consisting of translations of words from Spanish to English, marginalia in the same hand throughout, in pen and pencil, noting alternative translations, sometimes underlining, circling, or crossing out a word or phrase in the text and offering a different word or phrase, also adding chapter numbers from an unidentified Spanish edition; minor limited spotting and water staining, marginal tears (paper flaws?) with loss to blank margins affecting four leaves, generally a fresh copy; 11 1/8 x 7 1/4 in.
