Chromolithographed keepsake certificate accomplished for a black soldier in the Civil War, showing battle scenes, a portrait of Lincoln, and containing a central area where the name and service statistics of the soldier are listed, 25x20 inches; several closed tears, some reaching into the image, minor loss in the left margin which including some restoration in facsimile. Accomplished for Irenas J. Palmer who joined the 5th Regiment Massachussets Voluntary Cavalry on 26 December 1863. Palmer saw action in various engagements including Petersburg and Point Look-out. His was the only Massachusetts cavalry regiment made up entirely of colored men. <
