Clements attended Cornell and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In Paris, she and Ellen Day Hale developed a lifelong artistic and personal relationship. She lived in Philadelphia, where she exhibited, taught, and painted murals. In 1895, she became head of the Department of Drawing at the Bryn Mawr School, a post she held until 1908. Clements and Hale traveled and exhibited internationally throughout their careers, and were promoters and popularizers of etching in the States.
