Coronelli, Vincenzo Maria (1650-1718)
Epitome Cosmografica o Compendiosa Introduttione all' Astronomia, Geografia & Idrografia.

Cologne [ie. Venice]: Andrea Poletti, 1693.

First edition, quarto, illustrated with added engraved half-title "Gli Argonauti" (the Venetian Academy of the Argonauts established by Coronelli in the 1680s), added engraved title page, author portrait, and thirty-four of thirty-seven folding or double page plates, of which thirty-two are double page, and two (of six) are large circular folding celestial charts; one double page plate with functioning and intact volvelles; this copy washed throughout, indistinct ink stamps washed from title and each plate throughout; rebound in full calf, period style; 7 1/4 x 5 in.

"Thanks to the dense network of correspondents animated by Coronelli's action [forming the Academy of the Argonauts], the academy played a role as an instrument of exchange and intellectual reflection on geography, in Venice and other European realities. Membership in the Argonauts became a sort of status symbol: the social significance of belonging to the academy is perhaps what explains the success of Coronelli's initiatives in Italy, Paris, Rome and many other regions of Europe." (Quoted from Guido Abbattista's Global Perspectives in Modern Italian Culture, New York: Routledge, 2021.)
