D.A. LEVY (1942-1968)

Child with a Red Balloon and Telogy #1.
Two mixed media acrylic on board with cutouts, watercolor and ink on vellum, 1963. Each 278x216 mm; 11x8½ inches. Each signed and dated in ink, lower center. Each signed and titled, verso.

Provenance
Private collection, New York.

Levy was a Cleveland-based artist, poet and publisher and a prominent underground figure in the city. With his published works, he tended to focus on the sexual and narcotic habits of the demimonde of Cleveland, a focus which found him the center of an obscenity trial in 1966. The wide attention gained by the trial sparked a benefit reading at the Case Institute of Technology, attended by Allan Ginsberg, The Fugs and Tuli Kupferberg (see photo lot 148). The charges were ultimately dropped two years later.

Levy's artwork seldom comes up for auction.
