A magnificent sunset view of the ruins of temple Ba'al-Shamin, in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. Located in an oasis northeast of Damascus, Palmyra was long an important city along the caravan routes. She was often referred to as the Bride of the Desert or as is written here, Queen of the Desert. The temple is considered "the most important religious building of the 1st century AD in the Middle East" (Monuments of Syria p. 165). Orientalist p. 44.
