Additional Details

This edition came off the press of Felix Malteste, who followed the text of the first edition quite strictly.
The first edition, first issue of this publication was published by order of the government on August 19, 1839, the day of the official announcement of Daguerre's discovery. The original amount quickly sold out, however the text was kept by the printers who then produced a large number of copies for a number of publishers with variant covers and titles, and with the addition of advertising pages in some issues. This publication details the documents submitted to the government for their review of Daguerre's procedure, information about the invention of the daguerreotype and its process, Niépce's own description of his heliographc process, excerpts of letters between Daguerre and Niépce and a description of the illustrated plates. (Niépce, who was overshadowed by his partner Daguerre after his death, is credited for producing the world's first true photographic image in 1826-1827.)
