DAIDO MORIYAMA (1938- )

71 NY.
Screenprint on canvas, 2007. 1549x1105 mm; 61x43½ inches. Signed in Japanese and English, and numbered 2/3 in marker, verso.

Daido Moriyama created his first screenprint in 1968, inspired by Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement. His signature rough, out of focus and grainy photography style translated well into the medium, and led to his 1974 performance titled "Printing Show." The performance culminated in a staple-bound and screenprinted photobook, Another Country–New York, comprising of photocopied images taken during a trip the artist made to New York in 1971, his first trip outside of Japan. This print combines multiple images taken during that trip, as we see his exploration and unflinching portrayal of the city in the early 70s.
