DALE NICHOLS
Wreck of the Old '97.

Color lithograph, 1950. 238x340 mm; 9 3/8x13 3/8 inches, full margins. Signed and dated in pencil, lower margin.

The "Old 97," a Southern Railway locomotive, officially known as the Fast Mail, was en route from Monroe, Virginia, to Spencer, North Carolina, when it derailed at Stillhouse Trestle near Danville, Virginia, in September of 1903. The terrible accident also served as inspiration for Thomas Hart Benton's 1944 lithograph, Wreck of the Ol' '97, as well as a popular railroad ballad of the same name.
