DANIEL FITZPATRICK (1891-1969)
"Forward St. Louis!" Cartoon about funding for the symphony, museums, zoos and similar institutions, c. 1929. Black crayon on board. 508x400 mm; 20x15 3/4 inches. Inscribed and signed in lower right image, "To Mr. Frank Crunden who knows good left-handed fiddling when he sees it. D.R.F. - Fitzpatrick."

The piece was acquired with other Fitzpatrick cartoons of the same apparent age and in the same style-- one of which was precisely dated to 1929 and had a label from a St. Louis Post-Dispatch program of the time, by which they sold art originals to readers. It is very likely that this cartoon dates to the same year, and may have been purchased through the same program.

Fitzpatrick won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work, the first in 1926, not long before this cartoon was most likely made.
