DANIELE BUZZI (1890-1974) LOCARNO. 1926.
391/2x273/4 inches. A. Marsens, Laussanne.
Condition B+: restored losses and repaired tears in image.
A colorful, inviting, almost impressionistic view of the Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary situated above the elegant resort town of Locarno. Located in the Italian-speaking Swiss Canton of Ticino on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Locarno has an uncharacteristically warm and sunny climate that allows for the growth of exotic, subtropical palm trees, cacti, bougainvilleas and more. From the 1920s until after the Second World War, Daniele Buzzi, who lived in Locarno, designed posters to promote his city and the entire Ticino canton. His work is always graphic and colorful, but it is his early posters, like this one, which stand out artistically, as his style became much more straightforward and illustration-like after the 1930s. Tourism Posters of Switzerland, AT Verlag, 1981, no. 28, p. 38.
