Rossetti (1828-1882) was a British painter, illustrator and poet. In 1848, he formed the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, along with fellow artists William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. The group sought to reform British art by espousing a return to the intense detail, complex compositions, and vivid colors seen in Medieval and Renaissance art, and went on to significantly influence future generations including the European Symbolists and the Aesthetic Movement.
