D'APRÉS ENSOR

ZAMBEZI / VICTORIA FALLS RHODESIA. 1938.

39x24 1/4 inches, 99x61 1/2 cm. Gov't Lithographer, Salisbury.
Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears at edges, some into border and text; minor creases and restoration around margins and border.

In 1895, the country of South Zambezia was re-named Rhodesia after Cecil Rhodes, the British colonial whose South Africa Company governed the area from 1889. The country is currently referred to as Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River, which leads to Victoria Falls (one of the world's largest waterfalls) is the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The original name of the waterfall, "Mosi Oa Tunya," (from the Kololo or Lozi language) means the "Smoke that Thunders." This same image was used on the cover of a promotional brochure.
