Additional Details

Mannevillete substantially enlarged his atlas from the first edition of 1745 with his own new maps and also by partnering with members of the French and British Admiralty to include charts presenting their most recent discoveries in Southeast Asia. Most notably among these was Alexander Dalrymple, a hydrographer to the British East India Company and close friend of Mannevillette's. Dalrymple's charts offered major new information which was useful to those interested in navigating the increasingly advantageous trade routes to India, Southeast Asia and China. Upon the death of his friend, Dalrymple expressed the opinion "In the enlightened ages of modern times there has scarcely been one hydrographer, deserving the appellation, but D'Apres" (Dalrymple, General Collection of Nautical Publications, London 1783, p. 5).
