The Chamonix-Montenvers Rail was completed in 1909 and enabled tourists to easily make the ascent to view the astonishing glacier, the "Sea of Ice." The different vignettes depict the elaborate viaducts required for the train tracks, the cog railway itself, an Alpine herder and his flock, and the train's terminal, the Refuge du Montenvers, built in 1880. Italian-born Dellepiane studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Marseille and worked under the direction of Jules Chéret in Paris in the early 1890s. Le Train p. 29, Alpi 41, Chemins de Fer 71.
