Additional Details

This menu and others like it may have been distributed to guests of a February 2, 1978, dinner held in celebration Geldzahler's career as a curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which began in 1960 and which ended on February 1, 1978; Geldzahler had been appointed Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New York in January. The original artwork from which the present lot was created is part of the MET's permanent collection (Accession Number: 2008.470). Interestingly, Keith Haring also created an artwork for a special dinner: Self Portrait (Invitation to Palladium Dinner) (1985).
