A study for the painting Portrait of the Artist (Pool with Two Figures)<>, which was exhibited at André Emmerich Gallery, New York, in May, 1972. Hockney enlisted the help of John St. Clair in order to complete the painting. They travelled to the south of France, and Hockney shot a series of approximately 200 photographs of St. Clair, who was the model for the underwater figure in the painting.
