DAVID J. MARTIN (1951 - ?)

Contemplative man.
Illustration for a Book Jacket for St. Martins press, circa 1980. Pastel on paper. 400 x 521 mm; 15 3/4 x 20 1/2 x inches. Initialed DM.

This work is the original illustration for "Kevin" by Wallace Hamilton (1980) a "coming out" novel.

David Martin launched his career in New York as a professional illustrator, producing Barney's department store advertisements, and creating work for magazines like Esquire and GQ. He was also a book cover artist for St. Martin's Press and their trade paperback line, Stonewall Inn Editions. In 1983, he moved to Los Angeles where he regularly contributed artwork to The Advocate, and even illustrated their publication, "Guide to Gay Los Angeles" during the 1984 Olympics.

Martin was born in Wyoming, and later studied art in Woodstock, NY. His work is admired for its adherence to the old master techniques, as well as for the hard-edge accuracy of photorealism.
