Reverend Fréderic Joël Jean Gerard Monod. 1843-48.
Salted paper print from a calotype negative, the image measuring 8x6 inches (20.3x15.2 cm.), the mount 14¾x10½ inches (37.5x26.77 cm.), with a caption in pencil, and a Royal Scottish Academy monogram stamp on mount recto.

Provenance
Swann Galleries, sale 1981, lot 4, October 21, 2003; to the Collection of Neil Robert Berzak

Rev. Monod was the founder of the Free French Reformed Church. This portrait was used as a study for David Octavius Hill's painting "The First General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, Signing the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, at Tanfield, Edinburgh, May 1843." The caption is in an unidentified period hand, which appears on other prints by Hill & Adamson.
