Additional Details

Wojnarowicz was known for putting the AIDS epidemic at the forefront of New York contemporary art. This sketchbook, an early work completed as a teenager, before he emerged as an important member of the avant-garde art scene in New York, illustrates his early interest in art as a means of expression for his quirky sense of humor. In his early, formative years as an artist Wojnarowicz found inspiration in works by other prominent artists, in this case several of the "stoned" drawings were adopted from illustrations by the American cartoonist Robert Crumb (born 1943). This sketchbook "is based on the realities of life. 'How people feel, think or do other wise..." Wojnarowicz (then going by the surname Voyna, which his mother used at the time) noted in a postscript, "P.S. another way this book describe's is the different high's that people are on. Most not using drugs."
