I regret her determination to marry, but cannot object to the object of her choice. He is a young Banker of this place and is perfectly moral--of good family, pious, and of good disposition--but poor and the necessity for self after the war prevented his getting a classical education. He is of suitable age and temperament for her--his name is Joel Addison Hayes . . . . We have taxed ourselves to the utmost to build them a very small house and help them furnish it plainly . . . . Life is very dark to me, and I wish her to take life in bright quiet domestic enjoyment without publicity. . . . Mr Davis is on a tour in the Southwest and has been so far received in a most flattering manner by Republicans and Democrats--he has made several addresses to them at agricultural fairs. . . ."
