Purchased directly from the photographer by a private New York collector, in 1949.

This is an early work by De Carava, whose first published book, "The Sweet Flypaper of Life" (with Langston Hughes), was published in 1954.

The work was acquired directly from De Carava after his first photography exhibition, at the 92nd Street Y, in New York City. The print is mounted and a handwritten number "4" appears in the lower right corner.
