DE HIRSCH MARGULES
Portrait of Willem de Kooning.

Oil on board, 1948. 500x400 mm; 19 3/4x15 3/4 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower center recto.

Born in Romania, Margules (1899-1965) was brought to America as an infant. He was active at a young age in the avant-garde New York art scene, befriending both Alfred Stieglitz and John Marin, who was his mentor (see lot 61), in the 1920s. By the late 1940s, Margules, who had become widely known as the "Baron" of Greenwich Village through his associations with so many personalities in the downtown New York scene, was close friends with Willem and Elaine de Kooning.
