Additional Details

The second of two world maps which appeared in De Jode's "Speculum Orbis Terrarum" of 1593, this is an unusual but very attractive globe depiction shown on a twin north/south polar projection with separate strapwork title-banners and border spandrels elaborately engraved with decorative wind-heads and clouds. De Jode's atlas was designed to be in direct competition of rival Antwerp-based publisher, Abraham Ortelius, but his venture was a contemporary failure and no further editions were issued - an outcome resulting in greatly fewer copies of his maps becoming available on today's market than those of his peers.

Shirley notes reports of "textless map sheets" which he suggests were issued separately, and prior to the atlas edition of 1593. While not leading to definitive confirmation that this map was printed before the publication of the atlas, the present sheet is an example of one such variant with a blank verso. Shirley 184.
