Additional Details

De L'Isle's "foundation map" of North America, published at the outset of the eighteenth century. "It is more usual to find a map's first state bearing the most influence, however with this map it was the second that secured its place in history, being the first to correctly display the mouth of the Mississippi River" (Burden). This is an example of such a second state, with the Mississippi emptying more appropriately at circa 284° longitude as opposed to slightly farther west as seen in previous cartography. Tooley, French Mapping 28; Burden 761.
