DEAN CORNWELL (1892-1960)
"Sherring followed the lane with the tramp's air of alertness." Story illustration for Part V of "Seven Men Came Back" by Warrick Deeping, published in Cosmopolitan, February, 1934. Oil on canvas. 1067x762 mm; 42x30 inches. Signed in the lower right, "DC 33."

Cornwell's illustration appears in part 5 of a 7-part series published in The Saturday Evening Post, before being published as a book (New York: McClelland & Stewart, 1934). Seven Men Came Back follows the lives of seven World War I survivors who form a comradeship of six men after World War I. Bonded by friendship, the men struggle with varying degrees of success and failure integrating back into civilian life. This image depicts the full-length figure of Captain Jack Sherring, the character that dominates the story.
