Study for "Marcellus and Diana before Caligula." The final version of this scene appears in "The Robe," by Lloyd Douglas, published by Houghton Mifflin Co. in 1947. The final version was also reproduced for an article in Life magazine the same year. Oil on board. 210x279 mm; 8 1/4x11 inches. Framed.

Additional Details

Cornwell (1892-1960) was an American artist and illustrator known for his contributions to Redbook, Cosmopolitan, and The Saturday Evening Post. During the Golden Age of American Illustration, he lent his talents to literary giants like Ernest Hemingway and Somerset Maugham and completed murals for 10 Rockefeller Center and the General Motors Building in New York. Also known as the "Dean of Illustrators," Cornwell served as president of the Society of Illustrators from 1922-26 and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1959.
