Additional Details

In the 1870s, Degas broke with the conventions of academic and classical nudes and created a series of compositions of women in brothels. From them, he produced a folder of monotypes which were bought by art dealer Ambroise Vollard who chose a few works with which to illustrate Pierre Louÿs' Mimes des Courtisanes de Lucien.
