Additional Details

Martin R. Delany (1812-1885), editor, author, physician, army officer and colonialist, the son of a slave father and a free black woman. His grandparents were African, his paternal grandfather a Mandingo prince. Though essentially self-educated, Delany's career was nothing short of astonishing. He studied medicine at Harvard College for one semester but racists at the school drove him out. He explored the Niger Basin trying to find a place where free blacks could emigrate and, following a meeting with Lincoln, he was commissioned as a major, the first black field officer of any significant rank. Sent to Charleston, South Carolina he raised two regiments of ex-slaves before the war ended. There he remained and was appointed trial justice.
