Delilah Pierce emerged as a pioneering painter and part of the Washington, DC color school of painting in the late 1950s. Born in Washington, DC, she received her bachelor's degree from Howard University, where she studied under Loïs Mailou Jones and James Lesesne Wells, and a master's degree from Columbia University. Active as both an artist and art educator, she exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Barnett-Aden Gallery in Washington, DC through the late 1960s. This later abstract series was clearly inspired by the work of friend and fellow artist Alma Thomas. From this same series, Nebulae, watercolor, 1982, is in the Evan Tibbs collection at the Corcoran Museum that was recently transfered to the National Gallery, Washington, DC. Other works of hers are found in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia.
