Hoss was a printmaker, painter and illustrator, born in Illinois. She grew up and studied in California, and always had a family connection to the National Park Service. Her husband was an official at The Yosemite Park and Curry Company, and the couple lived in Yosemite valley for many years. Della illustrated Mary Curry Tresidder's book Trees of Yosemite (1932) with thirty-four Art Deco-style linoleum block prints of trees and cones.
