DENISE WONG

Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day
Offset lithographed poster. 609x473 mm, 23 1/2x18 3/4 inches. 1971.

The year following the Stonewall uprising marked the first "Christopher Street Liberation Day," with several thousand participants marching from Sheridan Square to Sheep Meadow, in Central Park. The march was the final event in the city's first "Gay Pride Week." This poster is from the second anniversary march, in 1971, for which the Village Voice reported about 6,000 participants. Throughout the 1970s the event was also refered to as the"Christopher Street Gay Liberation Day." Posters from these early marches are RARE- we could find no other examples at auction.

Denise Wong was a member of the L.O.V.E collective ("Lesbians Organised for Video Experience.") active recording lesbian and feminist activites from 1972-1977.
