The Bandana Code, or Hanky Code, a means of men signaling to each other their fetish preferences, may well have originated in the California Gold Rush days, but was codified in the early 1970s. Various businesses printed cards with a legend to help understand all the variations. This same image was used on the poster for the movie "Hanky Code" in 2015.
