Until 1918, trains in Java connecting its two major cities - Batavia (present-day Jakarta) and Surabaya - were not allowed to run overnight out of safety concerns. When the night express went into service in 1936, the trip actually took slightly longer than by day, but was considered to be more comfortable, as passengers weren't affected by the daytime high temperatures.
