Founded in 1902 as the Java-China-Japan Line for the routes between the Dutch East Indies, China and Japan, then becoming the Royal Interocean Lines in 1947. In the early 1960s, the line's three passenger-cargo liners - the Boissevain, Tegelberg, and the Ruys - were refit with modernized interiors and updated livery; the exteriors were given black hulls and funnels, and a new logo.
