The Dollar Steamship Company (also known as the "Dollar Line") was established in 1900, named for Captain Robert Dollar - a pioneer of Trans-Pacific shipping. In the 1920s the line grew in size and influence by acquiring the Pacific Mail Line, Admiral Oriental Line and American Mail Line. The Southern Pacific Railway had owned the Pacific Mail Line until 1912, when ships owned by railroad companies were banned from using the Panama Canal. This Art Deco cross promotion encouraged travelers to take trains to West Coast ports from whence sea travel to the Orient could begin. Rare.
