The first Air Mail flight in the United States was flown in a Curtiss "Jenny" biplane. By the mid 1920s the aging fleet of De Havilland aircraft was replaced with Douglas M-1s (depicted here). Through 1926, the U.S. Government owned and operated all airmail planes until the Kelly Act allowed the government to subcontract airmail delivery with commercial airlines. The Post Office terminated its dedicated airmail service in 1975.
