A graphic invitation to visit the Edinburgh Zoo's most beloved and famous residents. Penguins have played a long and prominent role in the history of the Edinburgh Zoo, to the point that a king penguin features on the zoo's logo. Founded in 1913, the zoo was the first in the world to house and breed penguins when three arrived at the newly-opened zoo straight from a local whaling expedition that returned to Leith. Six years later, in 1919, the zoo hatched its own king penguin chick. Polar bears also have a long history with the Scottish capital, as they were on display in Edinburgh as early as the 1840s when the city's first zoo opened. This poster predates 1930 when the zoo constructed a new penguin pool.
