The Boston and Maine Railroad was one of the first in America to provide a "snow train" to get skiers to the mountains. Their inaugural trip was in January 1931 and the service continued through 1972. "A late 1940s B&M snow train poster advertises Sunday and weekend service from North Station . . . Much preparation went into the snow train operation. It left North Station in Boston on Friday for North Conway (Mount Cranmore) and returned to Boston on Sunday, allowing for a two-day skiing retreat" (Boston and Maine, p. 34).
