DESIGNER UNKNOWN CAMPBELL'S SOUP. Gouache maquette. 47 1/2x33 1/2 inches. Condition B+: repaired tears through top margins, minor restoration along edges. This exceedingly accomplished maquette is something of a mystery. In many cases a poster's nationality can be identified by its size. The French were known for posters of one size, the Swiss for another, but the size of this image conforms to no known formats. Dating it is a little bit easier as the typography, which is round and sensuous, bespeaks the late 1920s or early 1930s. It is a shame so little is known about it as the bold, powerful and well constructed image makes for a wonderful design.
