This was the First Carrera Panamericana in 1950, and the most important of any car race in Mexico. The race was created to encourage tourism and investments in Mexico and it took its name from the recently-inaugurated Panamerican Highway. The first champions were the United States' team composed of Herschel McGriff and Ray Elliott, in an Oldsmobile 88. This was the first outstanding victory of McGriff, who later became a professional racecar driver in the United States.
