Sale 2421 - Lot 4

Unsold
Estimate: $ 500 - $ 750
DESIGNER UNKNOWN CHOCOLAT SAINTOIN. Circa 1900.
73 1/2x47 3/4 inches, 187x122 cm. Camis, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases, restoration and overpainting in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
The product is relatively unknown; conceivably the name Saintoin is a play on words regarding the Paris suburb Saint-Ouen. The lettering at the top and bottom is identical to the posters of a competing brand, Chocolat Menier. The shaved poodle with a mane like a lion's (with the chocolate bar in his mouth), is a most unusual, unexpected and inexplicable choice for a brand. Chocolate p. 121.
