Elders & Fyffes Shipping, Limited, was founded in 1902. They were the first company to build ships especially for transporting bananas, with refrigerated holds for the unripe fruit. (In 1929, Fyffes brand became the first produce company in the world to put a label on their fruit). The Patia, pictured here, was built in 1913, then in 1915 became the Armed Merchant Cruiser HMS Patia until it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in 1918.
