Charleroi became a powerful industrial center during the late 19th century, holding its first international exposition in 1895 - a precursor to the larger-scale exposition of 1911. "The 1911 Charleroi International Exhibition opened its doors from April 29 to November 1, 1911, welcoming several hundred thousand visitors attracted by the many activities on offer: competitions, film festivals, thematic exhibitions, art conferences, etc. King Albert and Queen Elisabeth visited the premises on July 10"(charleroi-decouverte.be). The "Luna Gardens" section of the expo offered many attractions, including some with thrills: "Joyful Wheel," "Haunted House," "Pleasure Kingdom," "Water-chute," the "Scenic Railway," etc. (ibid).
